How it works

Explain the terminology before you compare

A quick guide to the access categories and ranking language used throughout the passport index.

Read the numbers correctly

What does each term mean?

Passport indexes use different data sources and scoring methods. These plain-language definitions explain the labels used in this snapshot before you compare passports.

Global rank

The passport’s position in the index compared with other passports. A lower number means a stronger ranking.

Mobility score

A snapshot of how many destinations the passport can access under the index’s scoring rules.

Visa-free

Entry is available without applying for a visa before departure. Entry conditions and stay limits still apply.

Visa on arrival

A visa can be requested after arriving at the destination, usually at a border or airport desk.

eVisa

A visa application is completed online and approved before travel, often with a digital confirmation.

eTA

An electronic travel authorization for eligible travelers; it is not the same as a traditional visa.

Visa required

A visa must be obtained before travel through the destination’s required application process.

World reach

The total destination access represented by the index, based on the categories it counts.

Methodology note

This tool uses the MIT-licensed Passport Index Data snapshot dated 17 February 2026. Its broad access score counts visa-free, visa-on-arrival, eTA, and eVisa destinations. Coverage and classifications can differ between providers, and rules change frequently. Treat every score as a comparison signal—not a final immigration or entry decision.

Why it exists

Use mobility as a planning signal, not the final answer.

People need a fast way to understand whether a passport is generally strong or restricted for travel planning. This preview gives context first, then points users toward proper visa and residency review before decisions are made.

Mobility context

See broad access strength without treating it as a live immigration rule.

Route pressure

Spot where a strong passport still needs documentation or visa planning.

Official check

Move into a route review before relying on any travel or residency plan.

Need route advice?

Turn passport mobility into a real visa plan.

Use the mobility snapshot as the starting point, then map purpose, documents, timing, and destination rules into a practical next step.
